Elventy Four’s entire set from Abbeyfest 2010

I wasn’t there at the time. Which makes me doubly happy that the good people from Brightsky.ie were to record it.

Content Content Content

Its almost a month now since the festivities began and we decided to take a well earned break here at Abbeyfest Towers for the rest of June.

As you are probably aware, we had the good people from Brightsky.ie down all weekend recording events as they progressed. Can’t thank them enough. Trojans.

We have recorded most of the audio from the weekend and got footage from (hope, hope) all the acts that performed in our town over the three days.

We are testing Soundcloud at the moment, which allows us to give you a little taste of what is to follow.

One track from Dermot ‘Blues’ Byrne below. We wondered how the Blues would go down in the Horseshoe. After 2 mins we knew – and it was all gravy.

Stay tuned.

Conor Brennan – Visual Artist – Abbeyleix Library

We promised you a good mix of artistic expression the weekend of June 11th, 12th and 13th, and the good people at Abbeyfest Towers stick to their guns.

Alongside the reggae, the blues, the rock, the trad, the clowns, the soccer and the skittles, we are proud to announce the inclusion of Conor Brennan, an emerging visual artist currently living and working in Portlaoise.

The work, we believe, speaks for itself.

Below is his ‘artist statement’. His work will be exhibited as part of a solo exhibition in the Abbeyleix Library over the weekend and we encourage you to check it out.

“I feel so lost every minute of every day. But I must admit, I love it. The ambiguous nature of being human is one of the greatest feelings I’ve ever known. Terribly humbling and empowering all at once. It moves me deeply, at times to tears. Read the rest of this entry »

Abbeyfest welcomes ‘Preacher’s Son’

Well we are all terribly excited here at Abbeyfest Towers this lovely Wednesday morning, and it is not just because we have only 9 days to go before the festival kicks off!!!!

It is also because we have added none other than ‘Preachers Son’ to the line up. They will be headlining Saturday night in the main outdoor venue, Preston House.

Blurb below.

“Preachers Son are Brian Hogan (Kíla) on guitar and vocals and Emmaline Duffy-Fallon(previously of Engine Alley on drums and vocals. Together since early 2009 and gathering momentum with their dynamic live shows, they are frequently joined on stageby guest musicians, including: Shane Fitzsimons (Lisa Hannigan, Damien Rice), TabbyO’Callaghan, Kieran Kennedy (Black Velvet, Hothouse Flowers) and Dara Munnis(Doctor Leaves, The Coronas, Jack L).

They describe their music as “like a David Byrne, Scott Walker collaboration, or Queen’sgreatest hits circa 1980 vs Morrison Hotel. A bit angsty, a bit Bowie, a wee bit ska, rock, blues, country, punk, croon, Mars (God of War). A Led Zeppelin / Leonard Cohencrossover sort of Johnny Cash, Bowie doing Talking Heads kinda thing”.

Their debut album “Love Life and Limb” is currently having the final touches made byDave Bascombe in London (Placebo, Korn, Goldfrapp, Depeche Mode). Guest artists onthe album include Gavin Friday and Liam Ó Maonlaí. The album will be released end ofsummer 2010. Single X For Sandra available on all leading digital sites.”

YODEL – YAY!! HEE – HOOOO!!! ‘A Splendid Display of Stupidity’

I know – terrible title. But you gotta love this one.

The YODEL Festival Show is ‘a contemporary circus matched with traditional Alpine culture in a splendid display of stupidity’.

Check him out around the town, around lunch time. This will be followed by the Yodel Festival Show at 3pm in the Market Square. I don’t know about you, but the site of an Austrian Yodeller in the square just after a good feed is something Idon’t plan on missing out on.

“Yodel” is an absurd comedy where Wolfegang Glochenspiel from leather-Hosen-Land performs his world famous classical music on bicycle horns while riding on a 2 meters high Unicycle.

Witness a wonderful exposition of traditional Leek dancing with a chorus of juggling. Listen to the beautiful melodies played by his orchestra of Bell Ringers.

This is a highly original, funny and energetic show that will charm any audience.”

See You-delay-e-hawl there!!
